Gideon Toury 1942-2016

On 4 October 2016, Gideon Toury passed away in Tel Aviv at the age of 74. A world-renowned scholar, Toury was one of the most influential figures in translation studies and played a pivotal role in creating and defining the discipline.

A driving force behind the development of descriptive translation studies and the first author to use the term “translation norms”, his key works In Search of a Theory of Translation (1980) and Descriptive Translation Studies and Beyond (1995, revised 2012) leave behind a legacy that will continue to influence translation studies scholars for many years to come. Rising to prominence in the mid-70s, his impressive list of publications, which includes numerous edited collections, book chapters, articles and many translations of major works into Hebrew, attests to a career dedicated to the field of translation studies and the act of translation.

He was Professor of Poetics, Comparative Literature and Translation Studies at Tel Aviv University, where he held the M. Bernstein Chair of Translation Theory. Along with José Lambert, he was co-founder of Target, International Journal of Translation Studies and was General Editor of the Benjamins Translation Library.

He shall be greatly missed by his colleagues and students.

Foundation of INTISA

At the Associations Summit on 15 September 2016 in Aarhus, the International Network of Translation and Interpreting Studies Associations (INTISA) was founded. IATIS is one of the member associations and will benefit from the networking and information sharing opportunities on offer.

INTISA is a grassroots network with no administrative body and all member associations are free to contribute to the group’s news feed and to use the feed as they see fit. The research resources and conference list are maintained by one or several of the member associations. The network pursues the following collective aims:

- Promote Translation and Interpreting Studies in all its forms (including research on audiovisual communication, and localization).
- Mutually enhance the status and public recognition of our associations.
- Ensure efficient and widespread distribution of information on Translation and Interpreting Studies events and activities.
- Where possible, develop and share materials and activities for translation and interpreting research and the training of researchers.
See the website for a full list of members, association aims, resources and news.
